The increase in functional behavior assessments (FBA) can be attributed, at least in part, to federal mandates (IDEA 2004) requiring that an FBA can be conducted in certain circumstances. The purpose of this talk is to discuss the process of conducting a functional behavior assessment and the importance of selecting assessments and data collection systems to identify behaviors for increase and decrease. Special attention will be paid to collection methodology and instructing attendees on how to identify and capture relevant, meaningful data. In addition, ethical considerations for conducting functional behavior assessments and procedural safeguards will be discussed.
